5. Being known
This is the main difference. Instead of getting general advice from a book, a group course or other form of coaching with a coach you get advice perfect for you, for your needs. This is a game changer and it’s what will create a transformation like no other. This creates real and lasting change.
As you journey into the daily unknown, you have a general idea of the destination and no road map for how to get there. Your coach knows the destination and a wide variety of past paths. None of those may fit you perfectly and knowing all of them can increase your probability of getting to the right destination.
7. Outside the box
We don’t see our own weaknesses or blind spots; even good coaches have a coach. A coach looks at you from outside your experience and can see those blind spots. She can see the outside of all surfaces of your box, four sides and top and bottom. And is eloquent enough to describe it to you for actionable insights. You will begin to think more creatively and learn how to ask for input from multiple sources. You will look at everything from a broader perspective and have the support to make changes.
The human body sends 11 million bits per second to the brain for processing; with new ventures, it seems like the signals coming in are twice or three times normal! Yet the conscious mind seems to be able to process only 50 bits per second. A good coach asks you questions that help you filter the 50 bits per second most important to you. Learning this questioning process lasts a lifetime.
Having somebody rooting for you and believing in you is sometimes all we need. It nourishes our soul and gets us to show up as our best selves. Which of course brings in success and new opportunities. A good coach is an untiring cheerleader.
10. Get off the merry-go-round
Get a coach. Be ready to be challenged. Be ready to face your fears. Your coach gets you off the merry go round of repeating mistakes. Get off the merry go round and walk straight to goals. Your frank discussions with someone not beholden to you will help you determine what you need to change as a manager and as an organizational approach.
